Taxis are a common and convenient transport mode in most of Taiwan’s cities. They are often a good option for short-distance travel, transport to/from transportation hubs, and in locations lacking convenient public transportation.
Pricing method
Most of Taiwan’s taxis use meters that automatically calculate fares based on distance and travel time. Charges may be added for highways or late-night travel. If you are in doubt, you should confirm the fees with the driver before beginning the journey. Also, on-line hailing platforms will generally provide an estimated fare.
Roadside taxis: a convenient option for casual travel
You can directly hail taxis on roads or in taxi queuing areas. Taxis are usually yellow and have small red lights in their windows. If the red light is on, the taxi is available. Taxis are equipped with meters, and receipts are available. Cash is always accepted. Some taxis also accept credit cards or mobile payments. If non-cash payment is desired, the rider should confirm with the driver that this is acceptable before departure.
Online taxi platforms: simplicity and good itinerary control
Common on-line platforms include Taiwan Taxi, Uber, LINE TAXI and yoxi.

If you would like a receipt, it is best to let the driver know in advance.

If you realize that you have a lost item, write down the taxi number and contact the platform’s customer service center or the police in order to find it.

If you believe the driver charged an unreasonable fare or otherwise acted improperly, please write down the taxi number and the driver's name. Also make a record of the time, place and circumstances. You can file a complaint with the local police or local police foreign affairs section.
